Is It Formal?
If so, then you need to hunt for a formal dress that will compliment your theme but also allow you to stand out as the princess of the ball.Even if your theme is on the casual side, you will want to make sure that your outfit has a bit of pizazz to it. Buy some trendy shoes, blinged out earrings or hair accessories. Just make sure the items are comfortable and not pulling at you or killing your feet by the end of the night. 
Express Yourself
This is your moment to shine, so choose a dress that shows a bit of your personality and flare. Go ahead and make your fashion sense flourish for all to see. Most importantly, choose a dress that you feel absolutely amazing in.

It’s ok to wear jeans as long as you can dress them up a little so that your outfit doesn’t look everyday wearable. Avoid These Sweet Sixteen Disasters
- Ball gowns and huge, puffy dresses in general
- Dresses that have some sort of train. You don’t want to be dragging that train all over the place. Save it for your wedding day. lol
- Skin tight outfits. You want to be comfortable and free to move about in your outfit.
- Any outfit that requires you to pull down in order to avoid your panties from being seen.

it would just depend on your theme. If you wanted to make it formal, then go with formal attire but if You wanted something a little more laid back, then you would go with casual.

I think a big, ball gown is totally appropriate for your 16. That’s what I’ll be wearing to mine this upcoming March.
You can wear one if you choose. It really is personal preference.
Not unless you’re having a gala at a castle. If you want to dress up, wear a short formal dress.

If you want to dress up, then go for it! This is YOUR special day Kristin and you should be able to enjoy it however you choose. I would simple announce in your invites that formal wear is recommended but not required. this way you give your guests the option to dress up if they choose but you also relieve some of the stress that some guests may feel about dressing up. Especially if they do not have the money to buy a new formal outfit.
